COMMUNITY-BASED  MENTORING PROGRAM

Community-Based Mentoring is the heart of our program. In this model, Bigs and Littles meet outside of school to spend quality, one-on-one time together—on a schedule that works for them both. Whether it’s grabbing a bite to eat, playing basketball, going to a museum, or just talking, these outings form a foundation of trust, encouragement, and friendship.

This model offers flexibility, creativity, and the chance to build a deep, lasting relationship that helps a child see new possibilities and feel supported every step of the way.

Why Community-Based Mentoring Works

  • Flexible Scheduling: Matches choose when and where they meet—weekends, evenings, or after school.

  • Deep Connection: Consistent time together allows for meaningful, lasting bonds to form.

  • Real-Life Experiences: Bigs expose Littles to new environments, hobbies, and life skills.

  • Strong Outcomes: Research shows these relationships increase self-confidence, improve academics, and reduce risky behaviors.

Who It’s For

Littles:

  • Youth ages 6–18 who would benefit from a consistent, caring mentor.

  • Referred by a parent/guardian or school staff, with parent involvement encouraged throughout the match.

Bigs:

  • Adults 19+ who can commit to meeting 2–4 times a month for at least one year.

  • Must pass background screening and attend training—we’ll support you every step of the way.

What Bigs and Littles Do Together

  • Go to the park, library, or community events

  • Work on life skills like budgeting or cooking

  • Explore hobbies like art, sports, or music

  • Talk about school, family, or future goals

  • Volunteer together or just hang out

No special background is needed—just your time and willingness to be there.

FAQs:

Q: How often do Bigs and Littles meet?
Most matches meet 2–4 times per month for a few hours at a time. You’ll set the schedule together.

Q: Who pays for outings?
We encourage low- to no-cost activities. Many of our partners offer free or discounted admission for Bigs and Littles, and we provide resources and ideas to keep things affordable and fun.

Q: Is transportation required?
Yes, in most cases. Community-Based Bigs are expected to provide their own transportation and may need to transport their Little (with parental permission). If that’s a barrier, talk to us—we have other program options!

Q: Do I have to be a certain age or background to volunteer?
As long as you’re 19+, pass a background check, and can commit to the time, we’d love to talk. Bigs come from all backgrounds—college students, professionals, stay-at-home parents, retirees, and more.

Q: How long does a match usually last?
We ask for at least a one-year commitment, but many matches last several years and even into adulthood. Those are the ones that change lives—for both Bigs and Littles.
